What Dance Moms And Mars Can Teach Us All

Published: Mon, 04/15/13

With Mars conjunct Mercury, I think about prowess a lot. I'm talking about being effective (Mars) at what you do, like a chef or a surgeon who is skilled with a knife.

I think about prowess every time I watch Dance Moms. I know that a lot of people are horrified by this show. In particular, they're horrified by the dance instructor, Abby Lee Smith.

If you've seen the show, you know that Abby is a ruthless teacher. She also has a mouth on her that won't quit. She can be mean, she's not always fair, and she goes overboard at times.

But Abby is undeniably effective, and that's why I like her. What I like even more about Abby is her purity. She's a Mars archetype. She asserts herself, she loves to compete, she wants to win, and she wastes no energy trying to conceal her ambition.

There is no veneer and nothing foggy about who she is, which is not surprising considering she has a stellium in Virgo. She wants her dancers to be perfect, and if they fail, she's going to criticize them!

I think it's unfair that Abby is denigrated by the Dance Moms for whipping her dancers into performing at their peak. After all, this is exactly what she says she is going to do. It's the moms who choose where their daughters go to study dance. If they don't like Abby, they should vote with their feet. The door is open, right?

Instead, they stick around and bitch incessantly. They deny their own Mars energy, as if they have no drive to compete and win and be seen on top.

"All Abby cares about is winning," the moms whine.

That always makes me think: "And you're in her studio because you want to lose?"

The moms want their daughters to win. To achieve this, the daughters have to be pushed extremely hard. The moms have outsourced this job to Abby.

The moms complain about Abby, but she's just the tool they're using to get the results that the moms themselves want!

Everyone wants something and has a way of getting what they want. To better understand what drives you, look at Mars in your natal chart.  Consider its sign, its house and its aspects.

This information is included in Chapter 6 of my natal report, which is entitled: Drive and Ambition: How You Achieve Your Goals.  Check it out, because Mars is your knife and you may as well be familiar with it.

Have a great day!
