The other day I had a client who did not identify with his Sun sign. This is fairly common. Sometimes this happens because the person has a large stellium in a different sign. The person may have a lot of aspects from outer planets, a 12th house Sun, or various other things that seem to overwhelm or conceal the
Sun.
In reality though, your Sun does shine. In this case, the client was a Sagittarius. He was a young man with a masters degree, living in a foreign country, consulting an astrologer who is quite removed from his world. Sounds Sagittarius to me!
I don't think a person's chart can be denied over time. When you set aside factors of your birth chart, you set aside the good and bad shown by the placement or planet or whatever it is. Again, this is common so here's my idea: Get yourself a Natal Report.
It may seem like "beginner astrology" but it's really an outside perspective. For example, this is from mine, based on midpoints:
"Your emotions are very intense and you are excited quite easily. Love is very important to you and you are constantly seeking emotional fulfillment, but you will not waste time with casual relationships."
And: "You may have to deal with considerable nervous tension and are inclined to see everything a little cloudy. Expressing what is on your mind could be hard for you, and you could either intentionally or inadvertently deceive others, or vice versa."
Small bits like this give a person a lot to think about. Do you think I would read either of those things in my own chart? I don't.
Just think about being divorced from something so vital as your solar energy. It's good to know what you're working with...or working against!
